Stitched From the Future: It’s Doraemon!

Built in Tokyo, Japan, Doraemon was sent back from the future to help Nobita Nobi with all his general mishaps in life. A blend between Doctor Who and Inspector Gadget, Doraemon has been a huge part of my childhood, and has been sitting on my mental “to crochet” list for years! Don’t ask me how he’s a robot cat, I took that tidbit at face value as a kid and never questioned why 1) he doesn’t have ears, and 2) he looks nothing like a cat. At the end of the day does it even matter? Because just look at this little guy!

I knew Doraemon as 小叮噹 growing up, and this lil’ dude kept me endlessly entertained as a kid. The Doctor has a TARDIS, but Doraemon has a bottomless pocket that holds all sorts of fun and useful gadgets to help when you’re in a pinch! Makes me think he would be everyone’s bestie on moving day, he’d fit your whole house in that pocket.

If you need your own personal futuristic robot-cat assistant (the best one in the universe!), I’ll be bringing little Doraemon with me to SDCC next month! Find him and he’s yours to keep! And if you don’t find him, I’m working on a pattern so you can make your own! Screw AI, little robo helper cats are far superior.

If you’re unfamiliar, since 2011 I’ve been crocheting little characters from pop culture and leaving them behind for strangers to find at San Diego Comic-Con (and occasionally on my travels) by leaving clues on social media! If you’ve never followed my SDCC drops before, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Follow me on Instagram, Threads, or Twitter for updates on new critters!
  2. When the time comes, follow my clues posted to social media (specific platform tbd when the time comes closer to SDCC) to track the drops, where I’ll post hints on where I’ve left them for a lucky finder!
  3. If you find a critter, let me know that you found it! Please check in if you find a critter. Each one is tagged with a card with my contact info, I just ask for two things if you find one: 1) Send me a photo of your new friend, and 2) Let me know where the critter’s new home will be so I can add it to my map! I do this knowing that there’s a potential that anyone could swipe the critter and never get back to me on it, but it doesn’t make it any less disheartening when one goes missing.

No specific hints on where these little guys will be dropped, and I’ll drop them whenever the time and place feels right! Find one and it’s yours to keep! Happy hunting!

Pick your social media poison and join the hunt!
