Plan on looking for a critter? Here’s what you need to know: 2025 edition

COMIC-CON IS UPON US!! Which means the hunt will be starting soon! If you’re new here, welcome! I’m Cindy, and since 2011 I’ve been crocheting little characters to bring to San Diego Comic-Con and leave them behind for strangers to find by posting clues to social media, which later expanded to occasionally dropping them during my travels as well! I’m back for SDCC 2025, and I’ve got 11 drops that I’ll be doing, plus another 3 guest critters by Gina! Here are the critters that I’ll be bringing with me:

Say hello to the SDCC critter class of 2025!

I’ll have Superman and Batman, as I always have since 2011:

And a little Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen:

The Marvel universe’s favorite landshark Jeff will also be there:

Need an energy boost at Comic-Con? Maybe this power up mushroom will help. (Free pattern for the mushroom here!)

San Diego Comic-Con can feel like another world. Good thing I’ve got two intergalactic buddies so you won’t feel as alone. Princess Leia will be around, and a little porg might invade your space. (Free pattern for the mushroom here!)

If you watched KPop Demon Hunters, you’ll know that a certain blue tiger might get lost in San Diego. Derpy will be prowling around at SDCC!

Feeling grouchy? It’s Comic-Con, it should be a good time! But there’s lot of grouchy times too (lines that are hours long? Yup). Misery loves company, and what better grouchy company to join you than Oscar the Grouch?

And finally, a tiny TINY CHEF! Whoever finds this one better send me lots of updates of him on fun food adventures, this one might be my personal favorite of the bunch for 2025.

Also if you don’t find the porg or the power up mushroom, I HAVE FREE PATTERNS FOR THEM! Check out my patterns page to find them!

I’ll also have 3 guest critters by Gina! She also takes commissions, so if you don’t snag one of her cuties at SDCC you can order one from her Ko-Fi! Don’t forget to tag her as well if you find one of her critters, she’s @disconnected_child on Instagram. Her little Magneto has actual magnets in it – how cool is that?

Here’s the general rules and guidelines for my drops:

  1. Follow me on Instagram, Threads, or Twitter. Clues will be posted to all 3 platforms.
  2. Set up notifications your phone! This isn’t required, but it’ll help! Instructions on how to set this up can be found here for Instagram, here for Threads, and here for Twitter.
  3. If you find a critter, let me know that you found it! Please check in if you find a critter! Each one is tagged with a card with my contact info, I just ask for two things if you find one: 1) Send me a photo of your new friend, and 2) Let me know where the critter’s new home will be so I can add it to my map! I do this knowing that there’s a potential that anyone could swipe the critter and never get back to me on it, but it doesn’t make it any less disheartening when one goes missing.
  4. Critters will be dropped individually. No pairs/groups of critters.
  5. Limit of 2 critters per finder please! I know there’s some power hunters out there, if you’ve already found one, keep it to one more and leave the rest for others to find!

As for when and where the critters might be:

  1. No drops in the convention center. WAY too crowded, the critters would get lost in the shuffle. So no worries about trying to fish for one in the mad sea of geekiness.
  2. No badge? No problem! I make it a point to drop a large majority of my critters out in the Gaslamp Quarter! I’ve left little dudes in trees, in random flowerbeds outside of restaurants, etc. etc.
  3. No drops at night.

Drops will happen from Wednesday-Saturday. No drops on Sunday. Otherwise I try to evenly distribute how many are dropped per day throughout the course of the con, and I just drop them whenever it’s convenient and if I happen to spot a good drop location.

I’m also not the only one doing drops at SDCC this year! The Unofficial SDCC Blog put together this list of other kind souls to follow who are doing fun art drops and giveaways! Get ready for the hunt, and HAVE FUN. It’s Comic-Con, for pete’s sake. There’s always something awesome going on, so enjoy yourself. And while sleeping is optional, don’t forget to bathe. Comic-Con stank is a very real thing. Happy hunting!

Pick your social media poison and join the hunt!
