This little chonkster was created in 2018 as a collaboration with Louie of Club Crochet! You’ll find the pattern below, and visit his site for a great detailed video guide for how to make this little guy!

Materials

  • Size E crochet hook
  • Worsted weight yarn in: spring green, canary yellow, and olive green
  • Embroidery floss in black
  • x2 black 6mm safety eyes
  • Polyfil
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations are written in US crochet terms

Ch = chain stitch
Sc = single crochet
Dec = decrease
Sl st = slip stitch

Head and body:

Starting with spring green yarn:

Round 1: Sc 6 in a magic ring. {6}

Round 2: [Sc 2 in one stitch] 6 times. {12}

Round 3: [Sc 1, sc 2 in one stitch] 6 times. {18}

Round 4: [Sc 2, sc 2 in one stitch] 6 times. {24}

Round 5: [Sc 3, sc 2 in one stitch] 6 times. {30}

Rounds 6-7: Sc 30. {30}

Round 8: Sc 13, sc 2 in one stitch, sc 2, sc 2 in one stitch, sc 13. {32}

Round 9: Sc 13, sc 2 in one stitch, sc 4, sc 2 in one stitch, sc 13. {34}

Round 10: Sc 13, sc 2 in one stitch, sc 6, sc 2 in one stitch, sc 13. {36}

Rounds 11-12: Sc 36. {36}

Round 13: Sc 13, dec 2, sc 2, dec 2, sc 13. {32}

Round 14: Sc 13, dec 1, sc 2, dec 1, sc 13. {30}

Round 15:  [Sc 4, sc 2 in one stitch] 6 times. {36}

Attach safety eyes between rows 8 and 9, approximately 8 stitches apart.

Round 16: [Sc 5, sc 2 in one stitch] twice, sc 3, changing to canary yellow. Sc 2, sc 2 in one stitch, sc 4, changing to spring green. Sc 1, sc 2 in one stitch, [sc 5, sc 2 in one stitch] twice. {17 spring green + 8 canary yellow + 17 spring green = 42}

Rounds 17-18: Sc 16, change to canary yellow. Sc 10, change to spring green. Sc 16. {16 spring green + 10 canary yellow + 16 spring green = 42}

Rounds 19-20: Sc 15, change to canary yellow. Sc 12, change to spring green. Sc 15. {15 spring green + 12 canary yellow + 15 spring green = 42}

Round 21: [Sc 5, dec 1] twice, sc 2, change to canary yellow. Sc 3, dec 1, sc 5, change to spring green. Dec 1, [sc 5, dec 1] twice. {14 spring green + 9 canary yellow + 13 spring green = 36}

Round 22: [Sc 4, dec 1] twice, sc 3, change to canary yellow. Sc 1, dec 1, sc 3, dec 1, change to spring green. Sc 5, dec 1, sc 4, dec 1. {13 spring green + 6 canary yellow + 11 spring green = 30}

Round 23: [Sc 3, dec 1] 6 times. {24}

Stuff firmly with polyfil, taking care to stuff into the snout area as well. Continue to stuff as needed as you going along from this point on.

Round 24: [Sc 2, dec 1] 6 times. {18}

Round 25: [Sc 2, dec 1] 6 times. {12}

Round 26: Dec 6 times. {6}

Close off the piece and weave in the end.  Using black embroidery floss, sew on two nostrils on the snout.

ARMS (make 2)

Using spring green yarn:

Round 1: Sc 6 in a magic ring. {6}

Round 2: [Sc 1, sc 2 in one stitch] 3 times. {9}

Round 3: Sc 9. {9}

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Sew one to each side of the body.

FEET (make 2)

Starting with canary yellow yarn:

Round 1: Sc 6 in a magic ring. {6}

Round 2: [Sc 2 in one stitch] 6 times, changing to spring green yarn in the last stitch. {12}

Rounds 3-4: Sc 12. {12}

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Sew to the bottom of the body, offset to the side so that your little monster can sit!

TAIL

Using spring green yarn:

Round 1: Sc 3 in magic ring. {3}

Round 2: In back loops only, sc 3. {3}

Round 3: [Sc 2 in one stitch] 3 times. {6}

Round 4: [Sc 1, sc 2 in one stitch] 3 times. {9}

Round 5: [Sc 2, sc 2 in one stitch] 3 times. {12}

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Sew to the back of the body.

SPINES

Using olive green yarn, ch 25, then starting from the 2nd ch from the hook crochet the following:

Sl st, [ch 3, skip 1 stitch, sl st] 9 times, [ch 2, skip 1 stitch, sl st] twice, sl st 2. 

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Sew the strip of spines to the monster’s back starting from the tapered end of the spines, starting from the tip of the tail and ending at the top of the head.
